  • JUSTIN THYME

    PERMANENT RESIDENT

In 2015, we found a horse, abandoned and near death, in a nearby field. We brought him to our farm and with lots of love, round-the-clock care, and physical & financial assistance from friends, veterinarians and our community, he was able to make a full recovery. We named him Justin Thyme and soon learned that he had been a prize-winning racehorse.

Justin had earned nearly $300,000 in tracks in New York, Ohio, and other states. However, at the end of his career Justin was sold through auction yards as a buggy horse. Sadly, he lasted only two years and was placed in a crowded trailer headed to slaughter. En route, the sick, tired, and severely underweight horse collapsed, was dragged from the trailer, and left in a nearby field to die, where we found him. In addition to his terrible condition, Justin was also suffering from EPM (Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis), a potentially lethal neurological disease. Against all odds, Justin has made a full recovery and remains at Hope Springs as a permanent resident. Learn more about Justin’s story.

    Farrier: $50 every six weeks
    Equine Dental Care: $100/year

  • GIRLIE

    PERMANENT RESIDENT

Girlie is a 23-year-old sweet, loving, and sassy Morgan mare. She was surrendered about 10 years ago and has been a Hope Springs resident ever since. Shortly after she arrived, we noticed that something wasn’t quite right and requested a blood test from our veterinarian. The results confirmed our suspicions, and Girlie was diagnosed with Equine Cushings and metabolic syndrome. We manage her conditions using a combination of natural methods and prescribed medicines and supplements to help regulate her thyroid and glucose levels, with regular testing to confirm she is her healthiest, happiest self.

Girlie is living her best life as Justin’s best friend and stable mate, and is a permanent resident of Hope Springs. We sure love our Girlie!

    Girlie’s Regular Needs:
    Grain: $45/month
    Medicine/Supplements: $190/month
    Farrier: $50 every six weeks
    Equine Dental Care: $100/year
    Dewormer: $30/year
    Shavings: $53/month

  • KING

    NEW RESIDENT

Also know as DynamicSpeed, this 18-year-old, 16.2-hand Standardbred is HSE’s first kill pen rescue. After a short racing career, King was sold and worked as a carriage horse for many years.

He arrived at HSE on March 1, 2024, after spending a month in quarantine in Pennsylvania. He was VERY nervous when he arrived, but our team is helping King acclimate to his new home, and he becomes more comfortable every day. He is a gentle giant and wants nothing more than to be loved on. We are hoping he will be a great candidate for adoption!

    King’s Regular Needs:
    Grain: $45/month
    Farrier: $50 every six weeks
    Equine Dental Care: $100/year
    Dewormer: $30/year
    Shavings: $53/month

  • SKY

    NEW RESIDENT

Sky (a.k.a. Skyway to Heaven) is an 18-year-old, 16-hand Standardbred. He is HSE’s second rescue from a kill pen.

Once Sky arrived at the quarantine facility, it was quickly determined that he needed extra care. He tested positive for EPM and Lyme Disease, and was quickly put on a treatment plan that included antibiotics and pain relievers.

Once strong enough to travel, Sky made his way to HSE. He has since completed his treatment and settling into life at HSE. He’s still anxious and standoffish, but he is slowly coming around with consistent, gentle care. Sky and King are already best buds!

A recurring payment of just $20 per month (less than $1 a day!) will help feed and care for our residents year round.
